The Birdcage is a temple seated above the clouds dedicated to worshipping Garuda, a bird deity who has made the mountains their home. The monks that built this temple in Garuda's honor have dedicated their lives to protecting and praising the bird god out of respect and gratitude. Perched upon tall, steep mountains, many of the temples structures are too distant to be reached by bridge. The inhabitants have developed a series of gondolas in order to reach the other sights of worship. The monks and the birds have developed a personal relationship over hundreds of years. Although typically out of sight, in times of ceremony the monks can call upon the creature to make an appearance. Doing so is considered a sacred event, and can only be done in special occasion.
Huge thank you to Oliver Beck, who directed this project! A few more pieces with design process to come.
